Gilligan Barn Part 2
This large barn is owned by an awesome family who wanted to take the ~200 year old structure and repurpose it for the next phase of use. The barn was an interesting building to dig into with an integrated shed roof off of one gable, two different roof pitches, and a bunch of old farmers carpentry connecting the structure to another barn on site. The goal of the project was to keep as much of the original soul of the barn as possible while not being afraid to adapt the space for future use. The original barn stood at approximately 52' x 42'. The choice was made to delete the shed, add a new bent making the barn a 4 bay, and reframe the roof with a queen post supported purlin plate. The original roof had deflection in the rafters of around 11"! We kept the two different roof pitches and kept all bay spacing the same even making the additional bay the same dimensions as the original shed roof. The barn was finished off in two layers of 1" Eastern White Pine siding, and restored window sashes in new frames. Large sliding doors were added to keep the elements out, and the barn was finished with a small stage and large deck. This project is broken into two parts so that as many photos of the large project can be shared as possible!
